celiac disease awareness month

Does your tummy do a happy somersault when you find a dedicated gluten-free kitchen? Were you jumping for joy when a national chain like Starbucks launched a gluten-free breakfast sandwich that came in its own toaster bag?

If you’ve had moments like these, you may already know that May is Celiac Disease Awareness Month. Celiac Disease Awareness Month is a collective effort to support diagnosis, treatment and cure for celiac disease and non-celiac wheat/gluten sensitivity through programs for advocacy, education and research.

What is celiac disease you ask? It is a serious autoimmune disorder where eating any trace amounts of gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye and barley) leads to damage in the small intestine. Celiac Disease Awareness Month also raises awareness about non-celiac gluten sensitivity, which also causes mild to severe symptoms.

There are 3 million people who suffer from celiac disease in the United States, while 97 percent are undiagnosed. An estimated 1 in 100 people worldwide suffer from celiac disease. While more than 18 million Americans are living a gluten-free lifestyle to improve their health, it’s important to recognize that avoiding gluten is not simply a lifestyle choice for millions, but an essential need for those with celiac disease.

At Nima, we’re on a mission to enable you to be your healthiest self by giving you the power to know what’s in your food. We love our Nima community, and we are continually moved by the personal stories the gluten-free community has shared with us. We want to give back during this very important month and help spread the knowledge of what celiac disease is and showcase stories of people living with it every day. We’ll be sharing information, support, resources and more stories from our community on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook this month. Join us today for a CDAM kickoff on Facebook Live at 1:30 p.m. PT with CEO Shireen Yates and a special guest from our Nima R&D team.

During the month of May, we are also donating 1% of all Nima Starter Kit sales to nonprofits that support education and treatment for people living with celiac disease. Help us spread awareness this May and every day!
