From cafés with certified gluten-free kitchens to farm-to-table restaurants that happily accommodate gluten-free diners, you’ll be able to eat like a local if you find yourself in this corner of the Pacific Northwest. Notes: With multiple locations across Seattle, Portage Bay Café is a brunch institution. They’re known for sourcing ingredients from organic and sustainable local farms and offering their famous fruit bar—a buffet-style counter with overflowing bowls of fresh fruit, nuts, and homemade whipped cream—which is available to anyone who orders a sweet entrée, such as gluten-free French toast (like I did) or buckwheat pancakes. This is a great place to brunch with your whole family, as the menu has tons of sweet and savory options, both gluten-free and not. Portions are massive, so you’ll be well-fueled to take on the rest of your day. Brunch is served all day, seven days a week; I suggest going on a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds.

#nimatested Dishes: Small (10”) Garden Special Gluten-Free Pizza
Notes: “Savor without sacrifice” (the catchphrase for Razzis’ gluten-free menu) is easy to do at Razzis’ Pizzeria. With four separate menus that cater to gluten-free, vegan, vegan gluten-free, and traditional eaters, this is the perfect place to satisfy your pizza craving without jeopardizing your health. Not only does Razzis’ offer a mile-long gluten-free menu, including favorites like pizzas, calzones, pastas, and paninis, but all their gluten-free items are made in a kitchen separate from where gluten-containing entrees are prepared. My pizza was loaded with tons of fresh vegetables, melted cheese, and organic tomato sauce on a perfectly crisp gluten-free crust. Razzis’ food is super accommodating (and delicious!), but it’s still a good idea to always give your server a head’s up about your dietary restrictions before ordering.

#nimatested Dishes: Fish and Chips
Notes: A mainstay establishment in the heart of Capitol Hill, Capitol Cider has a 100% peanut-free and gluten-free kitchen. The high ceilings and dark walls makes it feel like you’re sitting in an upscale tavern and the menu, clearly labeled with allergens, reflects this vibe—there’s plenty of gluten-free pub fare balanced with lighter dishes like marinated beets and burrata with pear compote and sorghum flatbread. While I couldn’t test the cranberry cider I ordered (Nima sensors aren’t yet able to test fermented wheat products like alcohol and soy sauce), all of the bar’s ciders are labeled gluten-free. Capitol Cider is definitely my go-to for a nice night out on the town!

#nimatested Dishes: Cinnamon Roll with Cream Cheez Frosting
Notes: Located in the quirky Fremont neighborhood, Flying Apron is THE place to grab something sweet. Their kitchen is certified gluten-free, using brown rice and garbanzo flours in place of wheat. All their food items are not only made from scratch daily but are also vegan, and everything they offer is free of gluten, dairy, soy, and corn. It was difficult deciding what to order, as the donuts, cookies, cupcakes, muffins, and fruit pies on display all looked equally delicious. The cinnamon roll I finally decided on—one of the bakery’s top-selling items—was unforgettably decadent, warm layers of raised dough oozing with cinnamon and topped with a huge scoop of vegan cream cheese frosting. The staff were knowledgeable and friendly and the café was a cozy space to start my day.

#nimatested Dishes: The Blue Shroom Beef Burger and Tater Tots
Notes: Blue Moon Burgers is a Seattle-based burger joint that serves locally sourced premium beef, all-natural chicken and salmon, and homemade veggie patties available on gluten-free buns. They’re extremely accommodating to gluten-free diners, clearly indicating gluten-free menu choices and their kitchens maintain two gluten-free fryers to ensure that your fries, tater tots, or onion rings are safe to eat. The cashier who helped me walked through the list of ingredients in the Blue Shroom burger to make sure it was gluten-free and asked the kitchen to put the Blue Moon Sauce on the side. This is a great spot if you’re looking for a casual place where gluten and gluten-free eaters alike can enjoy a delicious burger.

#nimatested Dishes: Kale & Squash Polenta
Notes: This farm-to-table cafe was originally an abandoned laundromat before the current owners purchased the building in 1990 and turned it into a community-based restaurant that utilizes local, organic, and sustainable produce. Café Flora has since won many awards honoring their creative vegetarian cuisine and, lucky for me, many of their menu items are gluten-free or can be made gluten-free. My kale and squash polenta, plated with fig-balsamic reduction, cara cara orange slices, and melted Cambazola cheese, was super flavorful and filling. Expect a relaxed dining experience: the restaurant feels like a nature conservatory, with huge windows and lots of natural light and plants.
