gluten-free Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a city well known for its beaches, celebrities, nightlife, and food. The warm weather and Hollywood crowds have made LA one of the more health conscious cities in the U.S…which, luckily for us, means lots of great gluten-free food! We picked 5 diverse restaurants and tested out their gluten-free options.

Note: As with all our guides, always use precaution when dining out. The ingredients or staff can be different day by day and a Nima test does not guarantee the whole plate. Bring your Nima along with extra capsules and always let Nima take the first bite!

Urth Cafe

Location: 267 S Beverly Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90212

#nimatested Dishes: Eggs Salmone

Notes: With multiple locations scattered around the Los Angeles area, Urth Cafe is an Los Angeles favorite tucked into a cozy spot on the luscious Beverly Drive. Known for its vibrant, fresh dishes and impeccable presentation, this place is a hub for casual dining. Although it is not advertised as a gluten-free restaurant, they offer a menu with a quarter of its items with a gluten-free option.

The Butcher’s Daughter

Location: 1205 Abbot Kinney Blvd, Venice, CA 90291

#nimatested Dishes: Carbonara

Notes: The Butcher’s Daughter sits on a street full of gems on Abbot Kinney Blvd. With its plant-embellished and white brick interior strewn with candlelight throughout the restaurant, simply stepping through its doors is a delight. On Yelp, it is listed as a vegetarian and gluten-free restaurant. Although not every item on the menu has a gluten-free option, our waitress was knowledegable about gluten intolerance and was accommodating in helping us find the best option. In this case, she recommended the most popular gluten-free dish, their Carbonara.

gluten-free Los Angeles: smiling Nima with food

Location: 2208 Sawtelle Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90064

#nimatested Dishes: Spicy Tuna Roll

Notes: When one mentions Tokyo, one is flooded with images of a bustling and bright metropolis. However, stepping into Daikokuya elicited the images of Tokyo with traditional holdovers from a different time, where lantern lights and small eateries folded into the nooks of the city. While the ramen they predominantly serve seldom come gluten-free, the restaurant offers sushi with gluten-free soy sauce and various small plates that go great with a round of sake. The first time I ordered ramen, I was told it was gluten-free, which was not the case. However, in attempt to correct the mistake, the staff was more than happy to comp the meal and talk to the kitchen to best give me a gluten-free meal that put a smile on my Nima Sensor.

gluten-free Los Angeles: smiling Nima with food

Location: 2218 Lincoln Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90405

#nimatested Dishes: Vermicelli With Mung Bean Coconut Curry Sauce, Mango Coconut Sticky Rice

Notes: Satdha is a Thai and vegetarian restaurant with a variety of bright flavors in the form of plant-based fare. The staff was told us that the more than 80% of the menu items are gluten-free or can be served gluten-free. Luckily, both the mango coconut sticky rice and vermicelli got a smile from my Nima!

The Independence

Location: 205 Broadway Santa Monica, CA 90401

#nimatested Dishes: Chef’s Choice Charcuterie

Notes: The Independence is a gastropub in the heart of 3rd Street Promenade and has that trendy, upscale vibe that draws many for brunch bunches and dinner-goers alike. There is a wide selection of salads, pastas (don’t touch!), and seafood. I opted for the meats and cheeses platter to enjoy with some wine for an evening of unwinding. The restaurant is not listed as gluten-free, but the risottos and salads are clamor-worthy enough to be worth an ask when looking for gluten-free options that are not necessarily a cheese plate.
