Home to 165 canals (that’s more than Venice!) and millions of bicyclists, Amsterdam is a must-see for anyone looking to experience the Netherlands. And on your walk among the canals, here is a list of gluten-free restaurant options to keep you going.
Note: As with all our guides, always use precaution when dining out. The ingredients or staff can be different day by day and a Nima test does not guarantee the whole plate. Bring your Nima along with extra capsules and always let Nima take the first bite!
Location: Keizersgracht 504, 1017 EJ Amsterdam, Netherlands
#nimatested Dishes: Breakfast Sandwich (avocado, lettuce, tomato and egg on a gluten-free bagel).
Notes: A cozy bagel shop with multiple locations around the city. They have a gluten-free bagel as well as items that can come without bread. The staff was very helpful and accommodating to ensure that my meal was gluten-free.
Location: Spuistraat 266, 1021 VW Amsterdam, Netherlands
#nimatested Dishes: Yogurt Parfait with Fruit
Notes: A great place to sit down for lunch or grab an item for takeaway. I chose the yogurt as a takeaway option, but noticed that there were other gluten-free options on the menu. Most of the these options were quinoa bowls, salads, or yogurt.
Location: Raamsteeg 2, 1012 VZ Amsterdam, Netherlands
#nimatested Dishes: Lean Protein Smoothie
Notes: You may have seen this juice shop if you’ve ever been to New York City, but did you know it originated in Amsterdam? The brothers saw a need for juice after long days spent rowing along the canal. Now there multiple locations in the Netherlands as well as the United States! Almost everything on their menu is gluten-free except the oatmeal. It’s the perfect mid day snack while wandering through the streets of Amsterdam.
Tip: This location will also bring you close to other sit-down restaurants that offer gluten-free options such as, Haesje Claes. Just be sure to make a reservation ahead of time!
Location: Rozengracht 133, 1016 LV Amsterdam, Netherlands
#nimatested Dishes: Prawns
Notes: A high end restaurant along the canals of Amsterdam, Pesca is a great dinner spot. When you walk into the restaurant, the chef greets you at the door with options of fresh fish to choose for your meal. There were two gluten-free options on the menu for the day, tuna and prawn. After making your selection, the host takes you to the bar where you can choose from wine, beer or soda. Then, the waitstaff brings out your fish once it’s prepared. It is a unique dining experiencing and a great chance to taste the seafood from the Netherlands.
Menu changes daily.
Location: Berenstraat 38, 1016 GH Amsterdam, Netherlands
#nimatested Dishes: Dutch Pancake (with lemon sauce, strawberries and whipped cream)
Notes: Of all the things to see and do in Amsterdam, it’s definitely worth it to make this place a priority! All of the Dutch pancakes can be prepared gluten-free, and the fresh fruit toppings make it worth the line you will inevitably wait in for a seat. You’ll leave with a full stomach and a great experience!
Tatjana’s Review: I visited Pancakes mainly out of all of the recommendations I have received on social media. My Nima and I certainly were not let down! The staff was extremely understanding of celiac disease and reassured me that my food would be safe despite the restaurant not being fully gluten free. Long story short, I would visit Amsterdam again just for their delicious pancakes!
Location: Vertrekpassage 135, Lounge 1, Schiphol, Netherlands (it is in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport)
#nimatested Dishes: Gluten-free sandwich
Review: While connecting in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, I was pleased to see that Starbucks had a gluten-free sandwich. The staff warmed it up ensuring for no cross contamination issues. And…my Nima was happy! It was a great sandwich and helpful since I was in a hurry to catch my next flight!
Location: Strawinskylaan 85, Amsterdam, Netherlands however, I ordered using UberEats
#nimatested Dishes: Gluten-free sushi
Results: Gluten found
Review: I ordered from the restaurant using UberEats mainly out of convenience after a long day of exploring the city. I was also very excited to see gluten-free sushi since, it is very rare. Unfortunately, my Nima found detectable sources of gluten within the sushi rolls I ordered. The restaurant wasn’t too friendly when contacting them about this result as well.
