About Us

Nima’s mission is to enable people to be their healthiest selves by giving them the power to know what is in their food.

Why we exist

At Nima, we recognize that every body is different, and the food that nourishes one person might not work for another. Mealtime can be very stressful for millions of people who actively avoid certain foods because their health depends on it. We’re here to remove anxiety from your plate with better information about your food. We’re making the unknown, known. Because in the profound and simple act of eating food, worry is one ingredient that doesn’t belong. And we want a world where everyone feels like they have a place at the table.

Nima was born out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), co-founded by Shireen Yates and Scott Sundvor, who personally manages food sensitivities and allergies and uses Nima regularly to navigate eating outside of the home.

Our Mission

Nima enables people to be their healthiest selves by giving them the power to know what’s in their food.

Nima does this by:

  • Creating people-friendly products that identify ingredients in food
  • Sharing data that tells people what to trust
  • Championing people who care about what they eat

Our Products: How Nima Works

Nima is the world’s first portable food sensor, ready to be used at the dinner table. Nima currently detects gluten and peanut in food, delivering results in minutes and in the palm of your hand.

The Nima sensor combines an electronic sensor with antibody-based detection in a disposable capsule. Our chemistry incorporates new innovations on speed and sensitivity, and the hardware design allows the device to be smaller and more portable than anything on the market today. Nima also syncs to an app that will record test results and restaurant reviews for community sharing.
